STATELINE WORKS OF MERCY was established in the summer of 2021. What initially began as a way to help people being released from incarceration find housing and work,
it was soon apparent that the homeless and marginalized needed the compassion of Christ in their lives. The Corporal & Spiritual Works of Mercy became our Mission
Statement. These are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily and spiritual needs.
They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life. What better way to live our faith too! Many individuals from our local
Wisconsin-Illinois Stateline Catholic Parishes became the STATELINE WORKS OF MERCY.
Mission:
To welcome people in a safe, supportive and caring environment where they might ask for and receive a bit of help in their daily life.
What We Do:
Located at 655 Bluff Street in Beloit, STATELINE WORKS OF MERCY has a welcoming atmosphere with showers, a provided laundry service, a case management area, a lending library and computer access. Information & Encouragement with
Accountability is provided for those "caught" in what has brought them to living on the street. We look forward to the ways STATELINE WORKS OF MERCY will grow
and expand through the Grace of God!
BT says that “places like this make life more bearable.” He gave us a few
dollars for the coffee fund. He's a recent widower who is floundering,
but has a heart of gold when it comes to helping others down on their luck.
JP was so grateful for the shower and free laundry, giving him a little
break from his routine: “this is the first time I have sat on a
couch in over a year”.
KB is squatting in a house that he is being allowed to use. No heat
or lights. He's been in prison for a number of years and is making his way
back into the modern world. We think he has found work.
SR—talked about how hard it is to get a GED while also trying to work a
job. He gets a small job, but then has to quit his classes. It's a
Catch-22 for him. He would like to learn to sew.
S & T D—a Mom & Dad with two daughters 12 & 14. Mom needed
dental work—We referred her to the Health Net of Rock County. They
showered & did laundry while the girls were in school. ECHO
put them up in a hotel.
GS does odd jobs, painting & construction but is limited by past
injuries. We think he would be a good day laborer for someone willing
to cultivate good work habits in him.
FS works as a part-time cook. Wishes it was full time.
